Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847)
German, Romantic period
Fanny Mendelssohn, or Fanny Hensel upon her marriage, was an especially talented performer and composer. She and her brother Felix Mendelssohn would support each other closely throughout their careers. Fanny's compositional output would be hampered by societal expectations placed on her as a woman (her father discouraged her from pursuing music as a career, and she never received training in non-keyboard instruments.) Even so, she published several of her compositions under Felix's name, and eventually more under her own. Many of her compositions were unpublished during her life and have been catalogued by various historians.
