Scott Joplin (1868-1917)
American, Modern period
Scott Joplin wrote extensively in the genre known as ragtime. Rags are pieces featuring a "raggedy" (heavily syncopated) right hand rhythm over a straight left hand rhythm. Typically, the left hand bounces back and forth between bass notes and mid-range chords.
Try finding those patterns in possibly his most famous piece, The Entertainer!
Maple Leaf Rag
Solace - A Mexican Serenade
The second half of this piece, along with several other Joplin rags, appears in the soundtrack of the 1973 film The Sting.
